My Artistic StatementYou make a first impression in less than one tenth of a second, according to a 2006 Princeton study. Where does that come from? Your face, your body, the way you carry yourself, but the most outstanding and fluid part of that impression is the way you are dressed. What someone is wearing is what they chose to put on their body that day. Be it their work uniform, their sweats, or a dress for an evening out, what someone is wearing speaks volumes about who, what, and where they are and what their life is like. Truly observing what someone is wearing is extremely intimate, and even with just a look you glean so much information. At first glance, my job is to put clothes on bodies. When you examine the art more closely, my job is to understand and express characters, situations, and people through the art of fashion. The satisfaction when people understand a show better, or just plain enjoy what they see, is what keeps me going. I love seeing other shows and seeing the subtle choices the costume designer made, knowing that they succeeded in their goal. I know I've succeeded when actors get more immersed in character because of their costume, or when a styling client feels more confident in their body and themselves because of what they're wearing. |
